FIVE EUROPEAN COMPANIES LAUNCH COALITION TO ADVANCE ESAF AS A PILLAR OF EUROPE’S FUEL SOVEREIGNTY

9 June 2026, Brussels (Belgium)

Arcadia eFuels, INERATEC, Norsk e-Fuel, SkyNRG and ZAFFRA today launched the European eSAF Coalition, calling on EU institutions, national governments and NATO partners to make electro-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (eSAF) a strategic priority for Europe's energy security, industrial competitiveness and defense readiness.

At a time of geopolitical instability, attacks on critical energy infrastructure and growing pressure on global supply chains, the Coalition argues that Europe must strengthen its ability to produce critical fuels domestically and avoid a future dependence on imported synthetic fuels.

To achieve this, the Coalition is calling for action in 4 priority areas:

  • Recognize European Sustainable fuel production as a strategic priority by seeing fuel produced from locally sourced feedstocks as a strategic infrastructure that supports decarbonization, competitiveness, energy security and resilience.
  • Create Bankable demand signals as these are needed to create long-term demand, help de-risk early projects, and accelerate market formation.
  • Bridge the cost gap to support scaling sustainable and resilient fuel production, as eSAF remains significantly more expensive than conventional jet fuel.
  • Open Europe’s jet fuel market to enable the scale-up of eSAF, as restricted access to fuel infrastructure at airports creates barriers for new entrants and undermines investment certainty.

Together, Arcadia eFuels, INERATEC, Norsk e-Fuel, SkyNRG and ZAFFRA represent a multi-billion-euro Europe eSAF opportunity, with projects across France, Germany, the Nordics, Spain and key aviation hubs throughout Europe.

The Coalition states: "Fuel sovereignty is becoming a strategic necessity for Europe. The ability to produce critical fuels domestically is essential for maintaining connectivity, industrial competitiveness, and defense readiness in an increasingly uncertain world."

While Europe accounts for more than 60% of announced global eSAF production capacity, many projects are struggling to reach final investment decisions due to insufficient demand certainty and limited financing support. Without decisive action, Europe risks losing investment, industrial leadership and control over a critical future fuel supply chain.

The Coalition argues that Europe’s continued exposure to volatile global fuel markets, fragile supply chains and concentrated infrastructure is increasingly incompatible with its security, industrial and climate ambitions. As a domestically produced fuel made from renewable electricity, green hydrogen and captured carbon, eSAF offers a scalable, drop-in alternative to imported fossil jet fuel.

By strengthening energy sovereignty, enhancing supply chain resilience and supporting both civilian aviation and defense needs, eSAF represents a strategic opportunity for Europe to secure its industrial competitiveness while advancing its decarbonization goals.

The Coalition will continue to work with policymakers, industry leaders, investors and defense stakeholders to accelerate eSAF deployment and strengthen Europe's long-term fuel resilience.

Its objective is clear: to help build a secure, sustainable and sovereign fuel supply chain that supports aviation decarbonization, strengthens industrial competitiveness, and contributes to Europe's security and defense readiness.

About the European eSAF Coalition

Arcadia eFuels, INERATEC, Norsk e-Fuel, SkyNRG, and ZAFFRA bring together leaders across the full Power-to-Liquid value chain, from technology development and project delivery to fuel production, offtake and aviation market deployment. Collectively, its members represent a multi-billion-euro eSAF opportunity, with activities across key markets including France, Germany, the Nordics, Spain and major European aviation hubs. Over the coming decade, Coalition projects have the potential to scale to hundreds of thousands of tonnes of domestically produced eSAF annually. This would strengthen Europe’s industrial base, energy security, aviation competitiveness, and climate resilience, while helping to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. Together, the European eSAF Coalition is building the foundations for a more secure, competitive and sustainable Europe. By scaling domestic eSAF production, strengthening industrial capacity, supporting defence readiness and enabling the future of sustainable aviation.

Arcadia eFuels is an early mover developing commercial scale eSAF produced from renewable power, water and captured carbon. The company brings project development expertise, commercial experience in bringing new products to market, and experience operating large chemical and refinery assets. With a flagship project in Denmark, Arcadia has a growing European and global pipeline aimed at accelerating the deployment of industrial-scale Power-to-Liquid production.

INERATEC is a leading Power-to-Liquid technology company, delivering modular plants that convert green hydrogen and CO2 into synthetic fuels. With projects in Germany and internationally, INERATEC contributes core technology, engineering capability and practical experience in scaling e-fuel production.

Norsk e-Fuel develops industrial-scale facilities to produce eSAF and other synthetic fuels from fossil-free electricity, water, and captured CO2. With projects across the Nordic region, the company is building a regional value chain with strong strategic partnerships for sustainable fuels, leveraging abundant clean energy resources to help defossilise aviation.

SkyNRG was founded in 2009, SkyNRG has driven the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply and production pathways, building partnerships across the industry to advance aviation decarbonization. Its SAF facilities include DSL-01, a renewable fuels plant in the Netherlands that employs a HEFA pathway to convert residual fats and greases into SAF, and SkyKraft, an eSAF project in Sweden developed in collaboration with Skellefteå Kraft.

ZAFFRA is a joint venture formed by Topsoe and Sasol. Backed by commercial-scale technology and deep build-to-operate experience, ZAFFRA advances projects from early development through financing, construction start-up and operations – ensuring a reliable, long-term supply of eSAF to help future-proof sustainable flight for generations to come.
